What is Glyphosate?

Glyphosate is a broad-spectrum systemic herbicide and crop desiccant. It is an organophosphorus compound, specifically a phosphonate, which acts by inhibiting the plant enzyme 5-enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate synthase. It is used to kill weeds, especially annual broadleaf weeds and grasses that compete with crops. It is used both commercially in agriculture but also our local councils use it in urban environments. It is also known as the weed killer Round-Up.

However- Glyphosate is a non-selective herbicide, meaning it will kill MOST plants. It prevents the plants from making certain proteins that are needed for plant growth. Glyphosate stops a specific enzyme pathway, the shikimic acid pathway. The shikimic acid pathway is necessary for plants and some microorganisms.

So how is this widely used poison impacting on human health?

Well the above infographic explains this in no uncertain terms. Food such as grains- oats, wheat, rice, cereals and inorganic veggies are the most contaminated. High consumption of these foods leads to higher toxicity of glyphosates. This may contribute to-

  1. Mitochrondrial dysfunction

  2. Hormone disruption

  3. Metabolic disease

  4. Impact on human reproductive ability

  5. Adverse effect on gut health.

  6. DNA damage.

  7. Predisposition to certain cancers.

  8. Neurological diversity.

Zach Bush MD is a true talker in this field and has backed much research into this area. His blog link is here-

There is also detailed research which was revealed in the Guardian newspaper-

@timbiohacker on Instagram is also a great person to follow for up to date info on social and food poisons- here is a link to his video on oatmilk

My top tips for minimising your exposure to this chemical are-

  1. source a local organic veg box.

  2. Avoid oats entitrely. They are absolutely the highest source of this poison in the food chain.

  3. Buy organic cereals for the kids- its a small change but will have a big impact on their future health.

  4. If you are a grain eater- go for organic wholegrain rice, organic spelt, organic buckwheat.

  5. Spread the word.
